Liquidation Cascade

Overview

Liquidation Cascades are among the most violent and predictable events in crypto markets. When a large number of leveraged positions get liquidated in sequence, each liquidation pushes price further, triggering more liquidations in a domino effect. This strategy detects the early signs of a cascade and trades in the direction of the flow.

Cascade Detection

The strategy monitors multiple signals that indicate an impending or active cascade:

1

Rapid OI decline

When Open Interest drops sharply, it means positions are being force-closed.

2

Volume spike

Cascades produce extreme volume as market orders flood in.

3

Price acceleration

Rate of price change increases as each liquidation triggers the next.

4

Estimated liquidation levels

VECTRA maps where the next cluster of liquidations sits and monitors proximity.

Entry Strategy

This is a trend-following strategy during cascades — you trade WITH the cascade, not against it:

  • LONG_LIQUIDATION detected → Enter SHORT (the cascade pushes price down further)

  • SHORT_SQUEEZE detected → Enter LONG (the squeeze pushes price up further)

Risk Management

Cascades are fast and violent, so:

  • Tighter stop losses (the move either works immediately or it doesn't)

  • Wider take profits (cascades can produce 2-5% moves in minutes)

  • Quick exit if momentum stalls (cascade exhaustion detection)

  • Time-based urgency — cascades last minutes, not hours
